Women Leadership – an epic economic and social failure!

13062350_481559698717150_140020844491704421_n

Political leaders around the globe are intensely seeking solutions to boost domestic economic growth. Yet one solution that is proven and involves half the population is often overlooked. By unlocking the full economic potential of women, countries can strengthen productivity, stimulate demand and boost growth. In Asia, policies that bring more women into the workforce could counteract the coming labor shortage from aging populations. In Europe, improving women’s employment could bolster domestic demand. In Africa, giving female farmers equal access to agriculture supplies and services would increase yields and incomes, improving the health and education of the next generation. In Arab transition countries, addressing female youth unemployment, among the highest in the world, is vital for building more inclusive economies.

Women’s leadership potential has been massively untapped— an epic economic and social failure.

Progress is within our reach. Today, girls attend primary schools at the same rate as boys almost everywhere, and we are seeing more women enter secondary and higher education in a growing number of countries. Women now make up 40% of the global labor force.

Yet despite these achievements, the gap between men’s and women’s earnings and productivity is still large. Even in countries where women are graduating from college at the same or greater rates than men, the pay gap persists. More women than men are trapped in low-productivity jobs. Around the globe, women are over-represented in the informal economy, where wages tend to be below-market and job mobility is limited. Across businesses, women are underrepresented in leadership positions and in boardrooms. And from one country to the next, enterprises led by men too often out-earn those led by women.

Women with minimal access to resources and no access to child care have limited choices that too often mean low-wage and part-time labor. In rural communities in the developing world, when women farmers have unequal access to fertilizers or training, their farm productivity lags behind men. When rules and laws inhibit women’s ownership of collateral, economies lose out on the wasted talents of female entrepreneurs. This remains true today. Without the full contribution of women, no economy will reach its full potential.

The Background

Indian Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery is estimated at US $ 200 Million Industry while China’s cosmetic surgery industry is expected to double in value from 400 billion to 800 million yuan by 2019

while buttock and breast augmentation remain the most talked about plastic surgeries, procedures such as facelifts, eyelid surgery, and ear and nose surgeries are among the most popular when it comes to maintaining a youthful appearance and reducing the effects of aging on the skin:

Whatever part of the world you live in, age, stress, sun damage, and other environmental factors contribute to a reduction in elasticity, deep creases, and blemishes on the face, BHP explains. When the skin loses its elasticity, it can create folds and fat deposits around the neck, as well as jowls around the jaw line; all of which can make a face look older than it actually is. A surgical facelift procedure can actually shed years from the facial skin by tightening up the muscles and skin in the face and neck. For those seeking a more temporary fix, Botox and facial fillers are also highly viable options.

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a plastic surgeon’s tool at eliminating those dreaded crow’s feet or sagging and bagging around the eyes. Just like the delicate tissue of the face, this skin around the eyes can lose its elasticity and further age the face, BHP notes. Fortunately, as the medical group explains, this surgical procedure can dramatically bring new life to the windows to the soul. Many people are surprised to learn that the ears and nose never stop growing, BHP notes. This is one of many reasons why many people seek out rhinoplasty procedures which can reshape or reduce these features and help breathe new life into one’s facial appearance, the medical group notes. What’s more, BHP notes, the surgery can be done in a remarkably subtle way, so that others might simply assume that the patient has enjoyed a long, relaxing holiday. It’s probably no surprise that the number of plastic surgeries and cosmetic procedures continue to increase in the United States as they become more affordable and less stigmatized. But new data suggest Americans going under the knife are increasingly conscious of their derrieres. Male patients are also becoming a bigger part of a market once dominated by women. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there were 15.9 million surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2015, a 2% increase since 2014. The organization published its findings in a report, which analyzed statistics from 2000 to 2015 to track trends across the $12 billion industry.

Butt implants were the fastest growing type of cosmetic surgery in 2015, with Americans undergoing 2,540 of these procedures, a 36% uptick from 2014. The number of butt lifts performed also increased by 36% to 4,767 total procedures in 2015. Another facet of the business that’s changing is the patient base. Men are getting more plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures than ever, and for the first time, men accounted for more than 40% of the total 68,106 breast reduction surgeries performed in the United States, according to the report. That’s a 5% increase over the previous year and a 35% growth in the procedure among men since 2000.

The X Factor

As plastic surgery is becoming more common and accepted in men, we’re seeing more of them undergo procedures to tighten and tone problem areas, like the breasts,” “This procedure is often done in younger men who face genetic challenges with the size and shape of their breasts, and when appropriate, surgery can make a big difference in their lives.. It is not uncommon for young women to approach a plastic surgeon and ask to be transformed for things like deep double-eyelids and a V-line face

CHINA

China will become the world’s third largest cosmetic surgery market by 2019, with its market size estimated to double to 800 billion yuan from its current level due to people’s growing wealth, peer pressure deriving from social media platforms, and the influence of Korean pop culture, according to analysts. In 2014, China’s nascent cosmetic surgery industry was valued at 400 billion yuan, with more than 7 million people, most of whom are young women, having cosmetic surgery, according to the China Association of Plastics and Aesthetics (CAPA).

The industry group estimated China’s cosmetic surgery industry to double to 800 billion by 2019, making it the third largest market in the world. So What’s driving the demand in China’s cosmetic surgery market?

Apart from growing wealth, increasing peer pressure through “powerful” social media platforms — such as mobile messaging app WeChat and Twitter-like service provider Weibo — are also prompting people to pursue physical beauty harder than before, analysts from HSBC noted.

“Beauty and cosmetic surgery apps, which have millions of followers, encourage people to look at their own image with an ever more critical eye,” they said.

In addition, the “tremendous popularity” of Korean pop and lifestyle culture, known as Hallyu, is also changing the face of China’s younger generation.

In 2014, around 60,000 of Chinese people chose to visit Korea for cosmetic surgery, up 45 per cent from a year earlier, statistics from CAPA showed.

The big sellers in the industry are simple procedures that require no anaesthetic and “can be done during the office lunch break”, analysts said.

One of the most popular procedures is hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal filler, a simple non-surgical injection regarded as “safe and convenient” to help enhance facial contours, reduce wrinkles, hydrate and firm the skin.

China is a leading manufacturer of HA – which occurs naturally in the human body but diminishes as people age – and we expect HA dermal filler volume to increase more than 20 per cent annually over the next three years

The global plastic surgery market is categorized based on various surgical and non-surgical procedures. The surgical procedure segment is further sub-segmented into liposuction, nasal surgery, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery and tummy tucks surgeries. Non-surgery procedure includes photo rejuvenation and hair removal.

In terms of geographic, North America and Europe dominates the global plastic surgery market. This is due to rising aging population and high adoption rates of aesthetic products in these regions. The U.S. represents the largest market for plastic surgery followed by Canada in North America. In Europe, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the U.K. holds major share of plastic surgery market. However, Asia is expected to show high growth rates in the next five years in global plastic surgery market due to increasing awareness about plastic surgery procedures and growing medical tourism industry. China and India are expected to be the fastest growing plastic surgery markets in Asia. In recent time, rising number of geriatric people along with growing demand for retaining young and beauty is key driver for the global plastic surgery market. In addition, technological advancement in surgeries and rising number of obese and over-weight people have also fueled the growth of global plastic surgery market. However, high cost of surgeries and stringent regulatory approvals are some of the major restraints for the global plastic surgery market. In addition, high risks of adverse effects associated with surgeries also obstruct the growth of global plastic surgery market. Increasing usage of plastic surgery biomaterials develops opportunity for the market. India is viewed as one of the most progressive countries for cosmetic surgical procedures and this trend is expected to continue in the near future. This is mainly due to the fact that cosmetic surgery has evolved beyond the traditional concept of being a ‘risky or ‘impractical procedure that was demanded by women who were overly conscious about their appearance. Today, people in India understand that cosmetic surgery is a highly specialized and advanced niche of plastic surgery that helps people attain happiness with fewer risks and greater affordability.

In the past, cosmetic surgeries in India were associated with celebrities and people of the affluent class. However, today, these surgeries are increasingly becoming popular and are being undertaken by the middle class. Increasingly, both men and women from the upper middle class group are opting for cosmetic procedures to look attractive in order to get lucrative jobs, best possible marriage partners and primarily get rid of any deformity that they feel impacts their self confidence and self-esteem. Moreover, traditionally, men and women in their late 20s and early 30s were the key clients of cosmetic surgeons. However, a new trend has emerged where teenagers are approaching cosmetic/ aesthetic surgeons to get some cosmetic procedure done.

Slimsutra Founder Shelly Khera on an expansion plan, to explore meaningful collaborations both in india & abroad.

Slim Sutra Slimming and Yoga Wellness Centre managed under the visionary leadership of Yogacharya Shelly Khera was recently awarded at Pharma Leaders Super Brand Awards 2015 as “India’s Most Promising & Valuable Nutrition & Wellness  Centre in Diet & Nutritional Counseling 2015”

Slim Sutra Slimming and Yoga Wellness Centre  was recognized at the the 8th Annual Pharmaceutical Leadership Summit & Business Leadership Awards  2015 in Mumbai in December where more than 300 top leaders of the healthcare industry had gathered to be the part of the historic debate on  “Pharma Leaders 2015, Brand India Winning”. Slim Sutra received the prestigious & most credible award title “India’s Most Promising & Valuable Nutrition & Wellness  Centre in Diet & Nutritional Counseling 2015” by the Network 7 Media Group Jury for its path-breaking innovations in Yoga slimming solutions & variety of other lifestyle issues.

Yoga is a fine science that blends body, mind & soul. We at Slimsutra make every attempt to connect body, mind & soul in a natural & scientific way.

The yoga practice of mindfulness increases awareness of the body and its responses. That awareness is good for your diet. When you are aware that you grab a snack for quick energy when you’re tired, you can decide to get more sleep. When you remember the heavy feeling from an order of fries or the espresso buzz that keeps you from sleep, you can make healthier choices. Yoga poses that enhance mindfulness and relaxation might include Uttanasana, a standing forward bend in which the head and torso fold down as close to the front of the legs as possible, with the fingertips beside the feet or the palms flat on the floor by the ankles. Uttanasana helps to reduce fatigue, anxiety and stress. Savasana, or Corpse pose, is a long relaxed stretch with your back on the mat, legs extended and arms down along the sides. In Savasana, you are as close to sleep as you can get while still fully awake. Yoga and Weight Loss has reported on several studies that confirm the links between weight loss and yoga. Yoga creates long, lean muscles. That’s good news for looking and feeling fit on a diet. But the best news is that the muscle keeps on working for you even when you’re not working it. Muscle burns fat whether it is engaged or at rest. The higher the proportion of muscle tissue you have, the more fat you burn. The strengthening and lengthening aspects of evening yoga practice help you to lose weight while you sleep.

Yoga is not a recent phenomenon. It is an ancient Indian practice which is associated not just with the physical well-being of the body but with the overall health of a human being. I see yoga as a holistic package, which unlike other physical activities aims at cleansing and rejuvenating the human body from outside as well as within. If one adopts the practice as a part of everyday routine, one can actually feel the difference – mentally, physically as well spiritually. And as an added bonus, it can bring about weight loss too. With the growing trend of people getting more cautious of their expanding waistlines and increased instances of metabolic disorders – cancer, diabetes and others – there has been a sudden upsurge in people prioritising their health and resorting to tailor-made diet plans and fitness regimes. For the longest time in my life, I was of the opinion that yoga involves a set of exercises where holding certain postures for a few seconds was the main objective. I used to think of it as a regime meant for those who were already fit but were keen on building their flexibility. I could somehow never relate it to being an effective tool for weight loss as compared to the high intensive workout sessions in the gyms. It took me quite some time to understand the mechanism of different asanas and their efficacy but I must tell you, the understanding of it was enlightening, affirmative and oh, so gratifying!

Yoga and weight loss

Before we target weight loss, it is important to understand the various factors that contribute in weight gain. Apart from faulty dietary habits, one should identify that weight gain also stems from inefficient functioning of various bodily functions. Yoga has some of the most basic breathing practices at its base which aims at cleansing, balancing and rejuvenating our inner organs and their functions. Various breathing exercises and basic asanas help in increasing metabolic and heart rates. Once you are healed from within, the focus then shifts towards the outer body.

Yoga is considered as one of the the best and simplest ways for weight loss. The best thing about yoga is that it can be practised by people of any age as it is equally good for any age group. Even pregnant women are recommended to do Yoga because it can be healthful during the period as long as they take certain precautions.Stress has been linked to many health problems including gaining weight. Yoga, which is believed to be a good stress buster, will not only help you stay in shape, but will also reduce your risk of getting certain diseases. Losing weight and staying fit can help boost a person’s self-esteem and decrease stress levels.

Indian Affairs caught up with Shelly Khera to find out the origin of Slim Sutra & the importance of Yoga practice in our daily life.

Excerpts from the interview

Indian Affairs: What do you think that Slim Sutra has a niche space in the crowded Indian yoga slimming market?

Shelly Khera: Slim Sutra believes in the philosophy of combining evidence-based medicine with the wisdom of ancient wellness solutions. We believe we have achieved a fine balance between absorbing the benefits of the two sciences and merging them together for today’s informed consumer.

Indian Affairs: Are there any breakthrough initiatives that you have driven, if so, how it has impacted the society & quality of life?

Shelly Khera: Yoga is a huge wealth of health secrets that had been ignored until two decades back in the commercial market. Bringing it to the forefront has been one of our frontline endeavours; yoga as a mainstream health activity has been welcomed by the modern consumer and Slim Sutra is proud to bring about this change in the urban habit.

Indian Affairs: Elaborate on your name & its significance in slimming solutions?

Shelly Khera: Sutra literally means a rope or thread that holds things together. We a Sutra, wish to be that sting to you that will connect and bind you to righteous & healthy ways of living. According to Sutra studies, each client is unique in his or her health issues. Therefore, we take a customized as well as a wholesome approach to address your core problem. Our dedicated team of counselors study your diet history and create modified diets to suit your lifestyle. This is inherently combined with a scientific approach to weight loss.To ensure the transformation be constant and long term, we emphasize the importance of exercise in the form of yog asanas that not only helps in reaching the results faster, but also ensures immense control over senses and the ability to say no to temptations that arise along the path. We aim to offer integrated health plan for a healthy body, creative mind and evolving spirit.

Pharma Leader : What differences do you feel that india VS West in Yoga  slimming & wellness?

Shelly Khera: There is a vast difference between practising Yoga as a pure physical activity as opposed to practising Yoga with its ‘bhavas’ that is emotions. We have seen certain western institutions executing Yoga as a pure physical benefit which we feel does not do full justice to the power of this beautiful and wholesome exercise.

Indian Affairs: Given a choice, will you collaborate with the Government of india in its mission to promote Yoga & Yoga related healthcare services

Shelly Khera: I fully believe in the power of Yoga and the positive changes it can yield in an individual’s life. Given an opportunity, I would definitely collaborate with the Government of India in its noble mission.

Indian Affairs: Being the pioneer in Yoga Culture, Why the traditional method of being fit in Yoga, has still remained out of millions of Indian masses?

Shelly Khera: Yoga has not received the exposure it deserves as opposed to the popular and glamorous culture such as the gym. The effects of Yoga are slower to start with and definitely long lasting. This also leads to some sort of impatience in today’s fast-paced and quick result-oriented generation. However, give it time and patience & I can promise Yoga is undoubtedly the best gift you can give to your body and your mind.

Indian Affairs: Do you have any expansion plans to expand your centre in india & abroad?

Shelly Khera: Slim Sutra is a rare gem that is functioning with a soul because of my direct involvement in the entire process, be it the science or the final results. Franchising too soon may dilute the authenticity plans, but having said that, we are open to a genuine collaboration with health enthusiasts worldwide.

Indian Affairs: Are you open to collaborate with overseas players willing to open its wings in india?

Shelly Khera: That would be an honour.

Indian Affairs: During the next three years we estimate that the Indian wellness industry will grow at a CAGR of 20% to reach INR 875 billion. This augurs well for the Yoga wellness industry in India as well. How do you look at the current trends?

Shelly Khera: This generation’s obsession with quick results will soon highlight the importance of long-lasting and healthier results, I predict a boom in the Yoga culture and an affinity of the people to more organic and natural sources of health and wellness.

Indian Affairs: There will be a boom in the traditional medicine industry as we are trying to push the industry and take it to the international level. The prime minister has also decided to take this traditional science seriously. Your take on this?

Shelly Khera: I think its a brilliant and much needed initiative. The ancient Indian literature and traditional science has a wealth of life changing secrets and health solutions. If adapted well, it has the power to bring positive change in the lives of those who accept and practice it whole-heartedly.

NON SURGICAL EXTERNAL LIPOLYSIS

The new technology introduced by Slim Sutra called Non Surgical External Lipolysis helps an individual to stay fit without disrupting the daily course of life. This technology doesn’t require LIPOSUCTION or any other techniques which interferes in the daily routine and neither does it require any compromise on the diet of the person. The technology will be a breather for fitness enthusiast across due to the simple and easy to understand technique of keeping one’s body in shape.

The ultrasonic lipolysis, also known as aesthetic cavitation is a relatively new technique that applies a phenomenon knows in physics to aesthetics. This phenomenon is called cavitation, and is a very smart way to reduce fat because it is converted into liquid and then is naturally eliminated with urine. When cavitation is followed by a lymphatic drainage the process is faster, as the drainage is very effective eliminating liquids. Let’s look at the details on how ultrasonic cavitation works: The ultrasonic cavitation reduces fat cells with certain manipulation techniques, thanks to a machine that is placed on the skin exactly in the area that has to be treated. The cavitation physic principle was not used, until some time ago, in aesthetic medicine. The machine works with ultrasounds that form bubble in the tissues where the fat cells are. The bubble expands and then it is immediately compressed. The temperature increases due to the pressure sudden variation and the bubble implodes. The implosion damages the fat cells, reducing the localized adiposity. With the cavitation the fat cells are exposed to a pressure that breaks their membranes, unleashing the destruction of adipose deposits. The fat contained (triglycerides) fragments into diglycerides that are expelled via the urinary system. It is strongly suggested a low‐ calorie diet and to drink at least two litres of water before and after the treatment, being an essential step in the fat elimination process. Generally one cavitation treatment lasts 35 minutes, where a single part of the body is treated: abdomen, buttocks, internal or external part of the legs are the most common ones. Between a session and another 72 hours must pass, so the body can eliminate fat. The minimum suggested number of sessions is from 6 to 10. How does cavitation work? The advanced technology of cavitation enables the concentration of energy at precise depth in the tissue, which enables the selective dispersion of fat cells under the skin. The surface of the skin, the veins, the nerves and the muscles remain untouched. The fat out of the dispersed fat cells flows out in the form of triglycerides into the intercellular fluid, where it decomposes under the influence of enzymes into glycerol and simple fatty acids. The water‐ soluble glycerol enters the circulation and is spent for production of new energy, the insoluble simple fatty acids then travel into the liver, where they are decomposed like any other simple fatty acid, including those consumed from food. On which parts of body and how is cavitation executed? With cavitation procedure we remove cellulite and fat deposits which have accumulated on the BELLY, BUTTOCKS, THIGHS, HIPS, KNEES AND THE UPPER ARMS. With that, it is very important that you drink a lot of water, which helps the body to excrete the deposited fats. Who should make use of cavitation? Cavitation is meant for men and women who face problems of accumulated fat deposits or cellulite. Slim Sutra offer this unique, revolutionary and tested method of fat burning and body firming. Nowadays the shortage of time and exercise as well as inappropriate nutrition, rapidly increase the number of overweight people. A stern diet, strong will and hard work in the gym can contribute to weight reduction, yet they usually do not remove the inveterate fat cushions on one’s belly, hips and thighs. For a number of years surgical treatment (liposuction) had been the only solution for such problems. Does that mean there is no hope for men and women who refuse invasive procedures and the potential risks they bring with them? The cavitation procedure is a painless revolutionary service which does not affect the surrounding tissues and has no side effects. Even though many people are losing centimetres and gaining a new contour  during their cavitation sessions, they do not understand how this new miracle weapon against fat works. The time has come to clarify it.

Healthcare in india is of big concern & Prime Minister Modi must address it – The world’s most revered medical journal – “The Lancet”

The world’s most revered medical journal – “The Lancet” has lambasted prime minister Narendra Modi for ignoring India’s health sector and has warned that India is on the verge of a collapse under the weight of its own ill health. The journal will take Modi to task for failing to make health his priority, side lining his poll promise of rolling out universal health coverage and not investing in public health with a paper which will be published on December 11, written by some of the world’s foremost experts. In an exclusive interview to TOI, on the side lines of the Global Maternal New born health conference, Lancet’s editor-in-chief Richard Horton said “I don’t see any new policies, any new ideas, any significant public commitment and most importantly no financial commitment to the health sector.
Horton said “Since Modi has come in, health has completely vanished. India is on the edge. If PM Modi does not tackle health, India’s economy combined with rising population is not sustainable. For India, health is an issue of national security. The government cannot protect the sovereignty of its nation, cannot ensure sustainability unless it has a healthy population. At present Modi has done nothing much to tackle the challenge”. Horton added “At the moment, India is on the edge and it can take two routes. It can take a route of investing in health and investing in its people and creating a thriving and flourishing future for India which has a part to play in world affairs or it can do what it is doing now and ignore health it which case it will see epidemics sweep across the country creating an unsustainable future and destroying national security. I really think that it is that serious. At the moment PM Modi has not made up his mind on which choice he is going to take”.

modi
According to Horton, failing to combat non communicable diseases like diabetes and heart disease and reduce maternal and child health will cost India’s health system and social care “enormously making India collapse”. Horton sad the Dec 11 paper will challenge the Mod government on universal health coverage and what it has done. “Frankly, not much,” Horton added. “In the paper, we will talk about health financing and service delivery. The problem in India is that health has just completely dropped off the political agenda. Before Modi came in, health was an issue that wasn’t as high in the agenda as it should have been but it was definitely on the agenda. Since Modi has come in, health has completely vanished and this is a desperate predicament for the Indian population not having health as a central political objective of the government,” Horton said. According to the Lancet editor, rolling out universal health coverage (UHC) for all India should be an absolute priority for the government. “If president Obama can make the healthcare care act one of his central priorities, why can’t PM Modi make UHC his political objective,” Horton added.
So what are the main issues Horton wants India to focus on?

“The main issue is the lack of investment in the public health system and the growth of an unregulated private sector. And this imbalance between the unregulated private sector and the quality of care in many cases appalling compared with the public system that is struggling to meet the demands of the rising population. On top of it although there has been progress with child and maternal mortality, India has the highest number of child and new born deaths. It is not just an issue of national concern but of that of national shame for the Indian government and should propel it in making health one of its central objectives. Where India stands with maternal and child health is a major concern. There are still 600,000 under five deaths in India, maternal mortality is still very high”. “Maternal and child care are indicators of civilized society. Civilized society should not be letting its mothers and daughters die. India wants to play a larger role in the world, wants to be in the security council of the United Nations, which are very legitimate objectives for India. I don’t think it can claim to be a world leader when it allows so many of its children and mothers to die of abject poverty”.

So what does Horton want Modi to do?

“Increasing percentage of GDP spent on public health system and seeing his personal leadership in UHC, in reducing rates of child and maternal mortality and addressing the epidemic of NCDs. Those should his three absolute priorities for health,” Horton added. India currently spends about 1% of its gross domestic product (GDP) on public health.

Top Cardiologist Dr. Kaushal Pandey honored at Pharma Leaders Super Brand Awards 2015

Asia’s Most Valuable & Breakthrough Innovator in Cardio Thoracic  & Vascular Surgery 2015 Award Conferred to Dr. Kaushal Pandey, Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgeon

The 8th Annual Pharmaceutical Leadership Summit & Business Leadership Awards was successfully concluded at the financial capital of india in Mumbai at Hotel Hilton today where more than 300 top leaders of the healthcare industry had gathered to be the part of the historic debate on  “Pharma Leaders 2015, Brand India Winning”. Widely acclaimed in the healthcare industry as the pioneer in recognizing the leaders of today & tomorrow, Pharma Leaders brought together veteran healthcare leaders under one platform. The leadership Summit in the afternoon session debated crucial topics such as Healthcare Insurance, Medical Tourism, Challenges of Indian Pharma Industry. Hinduja Hospital CEO Mr. Gautam Khanna debated on the challenges of Indian Healthcare Insurance while Padma Sree Prof Dr. Shashank Joshi addressed on Brand India.

Dr.Kaushal Pandey made a passionate presentation on World Class Individuals : mediocre institutions: & failing medical education. The Award Winning Cardiac Surgeon stressed the need for qualatative improvement of healthcare services in the country to make healthcare accessable to the indian masses.

Expressing concern over the falling standard of education in both public and private medical colleges affecting patient care and healthcare quality in the country, Dr Kaushal Pandey, one of the renowned consultant cardiovascular surgeons associated with P. D. Hinduja National Hospital & Research Center, has stressed on the need for a major overhaul of the medical education system to produce quality doctors to ensure high quality healthcare.

“India produces around 50,000 MBBS doctors annually as compared to 18,000 doctors in USA but training of our doctors are not up to the mark as compared to doctors abroad. In India, the MBBS students do not get enough exposure to clinical materials and surgical procedures during the course to become well trained doctors, and there are a chunk of students who don’t have aptitude to become a doctor but they join a medical college just because their parents manage to secure seats for them in the medical college. Such doctors are risk for patients. The quality of the faculty in medical colleges is also not up to the mark,” said Dr. Pandey.

There is no legal compulsion for doctors to undergo re-training in the country. There is no system to audit the doctors on any quality of care measures which provide them freedom to do whatever they want after the basic qualification is secured. In absence of scrutinisation and monitoring to ensure accountability of doctors in public hospitals in both urban and rural areas, absenteeism among doctors has become common sight leaving scores of needy patients in lurch. It is not the case with private hospitals which have a stringent monitoring system to make doctors accountable to patient care, he said.

“If the government is really worried about people’s health and if the country is to stay competitive globally, it has to exercise its authority to introduce reform to medical entrance test so that students having aptitude to become a doctor get admission to medical colleges. Commercialisation of medical education flooding the market with poor quality doctors should be stopped at the earliest without any loss. The exorbitant capitation fees charged by private medical institutes from students should be regulated to make education affordable for deserving and needy students and steps need to be taken to overhaul the regulatory framework pertaining to quality of instruction, faculty development and curbing private practice,” noted cardiac surgeon said.

In order to overcome the shortage of quality faculty members in public medical colleges, the government needs to revive the old honourary system attached to healthcare in the country where talented, renowned doctors used to conduct classes for students in government medical colleges for two-three days imparting them theoretical and practical insight into the course. They used to charge nominal fees for it, he added.

He said that the government also needs to make integrated protocol-based diagnoses and treatment systems into the teaching programme for medical students and make them take a test after a certain period to ensure their skills updation and encourage use of technology with applications like clinical decision support systems to improve the quality of healthcare delivery.

Geographical location and infrastructure facilities should be taken into account in starting an AIIMS like institutes in the country by the government to ensure maximum optimisation of such facilities, he concluded.

Of the 4,000-odd multi-crore infrastructure projects in the country, only nine (0.21%) – with a total investment of Rs 938 crore – are in the health sector, according to data published by the finance ministry. The public-private partnership (PPP) projects range from diagnostic centres to super-specialty hospitals. Investments in the health sector are far lower than those in the transport and energy sectors. The lack of health facilities in India’s villages reflects the low investment.About 20% (35,389) of the 182,709 public health facilities in rural areas do not have their own premises, according to a 2014 rural health statistics report. There was a shortage of 6,700 (23%) public health centres and 2,350 (33%) community health centres as of March 31, 2014, according to data tabled in the Rajya Sabha.Government spending on health has come down from Rs 37,000 crore ($5.5 billion) in 2013-14 to Rs 30,000 crore ($4.5 billion) in 2014-15. India spent $69 per capita on health in 2013, the lowest among developing nations.
