India has reported 1,860 active cases of coronavirus as of April 3, 9 A.M., according to the Ministry of Health data. Besides, the death toll has surged to 53. The ministry added that 155 people have been cured or discharged, so far. The COVID-19 cases breached 1000- mark in 44 days (February 15-March 29) in India. However, within 6 days (March 29-April 3), the confirmed cases have climbed to 2,069. Maharashtra tops the tally with 335 confirmed cases followed by Kerala with 265 infections and Tamil Nadu at 234 so far. In Delhi, the number of cases in Delhi has gone up to 219.
Tablighi Jamaat attributed to biggest spike in coronavirus cases
The Union Health Ministry officials have attributed the big spike in the numbers of confirmed coronavirus cases largely to Tablighi Jamaat congregation-the biggest COVID-19 hotspot in India as more than 350 fresh cases of infection emerged on Wednesday to take the tally close to 2,000 mark. In Delhi, the authorities said coronavirus cases have risen to 152, including 53 who attended the Nizamuddin congregation. In Tamil Nadu, 110 people who returned from Tablighi Jamaat meet in Delhi have tested positive, taking the total cases in the state to 234. In Delhi also, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said 2,361 people were evacuated from the place of the Nizamuddin congregation, out of which 617 have been admitted to hospitals for showing COVID-19 symptoms while the rest are quarantined. The Uttar Pradesh government has also ordered 569 people to be quarantined for having attended the congregation, while Gujarat has so far quarantined at least 85 and a massive manhunt is underway as nearly 1,500 from the state have been found to have participated in the religious gathering. The Uttarakhand government has also identified 26 such people, but said they were yet to return from Delhi.Maharashtra has reported the most deaths (13) so far, followed by Gujarat (7), Madhya Pradesh (6), Karnataka (3), Punjab (4), Delhi (4), Telangana (3), West Bengal (3), Jammu and Kashmir (2), Uttar Pradesh (2) and Kerala (2). Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, and Himachal Pradesh have reported a death each.
State-wise tally on positive cases
Uttar Pradesh has reported 113 positive cases so far, while the cases in Karnataka have risen to 110 and in Telangana to 107. Rajasthan has reported 108 cases, Andhra Pradesh 86, Gujarat 87 , Jammu and Kashmir 62 while Madhya Pradesh has 99 positive patients so far. Punjab has reported 46 cases, while 43 COVID-19 cases have been detected in Haryana. The number of cases has risen to 53 in West Bengal. Bihar has 24 while Chandigarh has 16 and Ladakh has reported 13 cases. Ten cases have been reported from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Chhattisgarh has nine positive patients while Uttarakhand has reported seven cases so far. Goa has reported five coronavirus cases. Odisha has four cases each while Puducherry and Himachal Pradesh have reported three cases each. Assam, Jharkhand, Puducherry, Mizoram and Manipur have reported a case each.
How coronavirus spread in India
Most cases in India are of people who had a travel history to coronavirus infected countries or had come in contact with a person who had recently travelled abroad, this is called local transmission. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has maintained that there is still no evidence of community transmission of coronavirus in India.
Analysis of the first fifty cases of coronavirus in the country by India Today had shown that 39 of them had a travel history to a country that was already dealing with the coronavirus outbreak. Out of the 50, only 11 cases of local transmission were reported in the country. These first 50 COVID-19 cases were reported from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, J&K and Ladakh.
Testing facilities for COVID-19
Initially, testing for coronavirus was restricted to government ICMR facilities. These were 62 in number but over the course of March, the number of government testing facilities has increased to 126. After much deliberation the government allowed private labs to test coronavirus in India.
ICMR has given permission to 51 private labs to conduct tests for COVID-19 in the country. However, the number of testing facilities when compared to the population of the country is still very less. States like Bihar only have one testing facilities for over 104 million people, according to 2011 census data.

The global death rate is at 42,158 while 858,892 are infected by COVID-19 across the world. The United States of America (USA) has the most number of coronavirus cases in the world with 188,592 while over 4,000 have died. Italy has reported the most number of coronavirus deaths with 12,428 as of April 1.
China, where the virus originated, has greatly reduced the rate at which cases are being reported there. The country now has 81,554 cases of COVID-19, while 3,312 people have died due to the virus. Spain, UK, France, Iran and the Netherlands are countries where the number of deaths has crossed the 1,000-mark.
World coronavirus cases pass 1 million mark
More than 1 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 have now been reported worldwide.
As of April 2, the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has spread to 204 countries and regions, sickened 1,001,079 and killed 51,385, according to Worldometer, which relies on multiple data sources to track the virus spread. Roughly a month ago, on March 5, the worldwide case count came in at 96,888, Live Science reported.
The earliest known case of the novel coronavirus dates back to Nov. 17, 2019, when a 55-year-old individual from Hubei province in China contracted the disease. The case count in China reached 27 by Dec. 15, and climbed to 60 by Dec. 20, according to the South China Morning Post. Now, more than three months later, China is reporting 81,589 of COVID-19, 3,318 people have died from the disease, and 76,408 have recovered after being diagnosed with a confirmed case.
